The International Center on the campus of Michigan State University is a focal point of the campus and a popular meeting place for the majority of its diverse student population. The concept of the building’s fairly neutral design is that it must be recognizable to any culture and representative of all nations. Visual Entities was brought in to work with the interior design team to uphold this concept and modernize the interior through all new directional and informational signage.
A key feature of the design was a wall of clocks custom built by Visual Entities to display the time from eight different time zones around the world. Each clock was designed to accommodate a digitally printed insert that displayed an area of the world representing that time zone. The insert was designed in a format that could be easily updated by the client and is also found within the rest of the building’s signage in various forms, incorporating the school’s distinctive green color with shades of bright blue. The shape of the flooring patterns and bulkheads were also picked up in the signage graphics, where futuristic arcs and curves were used to communicate energy, activity, and travel to faraway places.
